I celebrate Marilyn Mosby, as well as the Baltimore officers’ indictments

Marilyn Mosby represents a watershed moment in American justice: She is an elected DA, from a family of several cops, married to a councilman — AND she is a black woman who was raised by a single mother in the inner city. But she is not a symbol nor a puppet. Today she acted like a true badass, who does not apologize or back down in a fight for timely justice. Six officers will face charges, and five were already in custody today. Bam. Accountability is finally in play.

Her full speech, which is pretty amazing. I love how she answers the questions at the end. HBIC.

Now, of course charges are not convictions, and this is only the beginning of a single battle in a too-long war for social justice. But THIS is what it looks like when “the system” rightfully includes representatives of all the people, not just the establishment. Only once it routinely reflects and acts in accordance with its true full constituency can anyone be asked to “trust” its processes.

I really look forward to following this prosecution closely.
