I join the fight for reproductive rights, as the struggle is far from won

Thanks to Karen Hartman’s column in the Washington Post. It’s a stirring call to action for abortion rights and reproductive justice advocates.

So here I freely state my position: I support the concept that all women have a legal right to safe medical or surgical abortion on demand, without apology. Without shame, without regret, without stigma. Without the required permission of their partners, parents or their legislators or judges.

In support of my position, I donate to action groups, I follow and share news stories, and I discuss rights/responsibilities and threats both socially and on social media. Sometimes I march, though not often enough.

But I can do more. If you are pro-choice, you can do more, too. And we MUST. We say “we won’t go back” but we could be forced to — and the way things are going, we are being forced to. (S)He who cares the most, wins. And let’s face it, there are really quite few “passively pro-life” folks. We must speak, formally and informally, directly and indirectly.

We MUST.

About amywinns

Semi-snarky, semi-sincere, occasionally ranting, always paying attention. Feminist who can work a skirt and crack a joke. Grammar nerd who is also fun at parties. Mid-career writer/editor with 15 years’ experience in newspapers & magazines who now helps developers at a major media corporation communicate with the suits who write the checks. Pro-women, pro-family, pro-choice, pro-workingclass, pro-entrepreneur, pro-farmer. Like every other bourgeois Brooklynite, I choose local/organic/raw food — mostly vegetables — whenever possible/reasonable/affordable but I’m not a smug asshole about it. Hometown: Atlanta. Weird hobby: lindy hop. No pets, no kids, no thanks.
