Chocolate is not “junk food” — it’s a luxury product. Treat it like one.

This video is only 6 minutes, please watch it if you eat chocolate. Very thought-provoking. I personally will never again buy anything but certified fair trade, if not also organic, chocolate (including encouraging restaurants to source their supplies). I should pay more for this labor-intensive luxury commodity — IMO, we all should. It’s literally the very least we can do as consumers of these farmers’ hard work. Can you imagine working so hard to grow and harvest the plant and having no idea what happens to it later? I have rarely felt like such a king-sized asshole (re: blissful privileged ignorance).

About amywinns

Semi-snarky, semi-sincere, occasionally ranting, always paying attention. Feminist who can work a skirt and crack a joke. Grammar nerd who is also fun at parties. Mid-career writer/editor with 15 years’ experience in newspapers & magazines who now helps developers at a major media corporation communicate with the suits who write the checks. Pro-women, pro-family, pro-choice, pro-workingclass, pro-entrepreneur, pro-farmer. Like every other bourgeois Brooklynite, I choose local/organic/raw food — mostly vegetables — whenever possible/reasonable/affordable but I’m not a smug asshole about it. Hometown: Atlanta. Weird hobby: lindy hop. No pets, no kids, no thanks.
