“This Town Needs a Better Class of Racist”

It’s not specific, it’s systemic. Written in the wake of the Donald Sterling/Clippers scandal, this very important essay offers extremely good internal support (ex: the Thomas Sowell link was really astonishing, in the worst possible way) and many insights that resonated with me and will help me expand my thinking. Really helps limn the truth that racism is institutional, and separate from individual biases/lack thereof.

Followup: a friend recommends Matt Taibbi’s “Divide”, saying “It’s a fascinating look at how different groups get treated by the justice system in ways that aren’t overtly racist yet end up (spoilers!) invariably shafting disenfranchised minorities.”

About amywinns

Semi-snarky, semi-sincere, occasionally ranting, always paying attention. Feminist who can work a skirt and crack a joke. Grammar nerd who is also fun at parties. Mid-career writer/editor with 15 years’ experience in newspapers & magazines who now helps developers at a major media corporation communicate with the suits who write the checks. Pro-women, pro-family, pro-choice, pro-workingclass, pro-entrepreneur, pro-farmer. Like every other bourgeois Brooklynite, I choose local/organic/raw food — mostly vegetables — whenever possible/reasonable/affordable but I’m not a smug asshole about it. Hometown: Atlanta. Weird hobby: lindy hop. No pets, no kids, no thanks.
