Let them just be friends, willya?

Look, I am a longtime, to the bone, activist/donor, LGBTQ ally. I am not even going to articulate that further, as it cheapens the principle.

This image has been popping up all over my newsfeed:

But c’mon, can’t Bert and Ernie just be accepted as friends? I mean har, har, closet queens… no! Bert and Ernie are great models of two people who work through their differences to live closely in harmony (most of the time) and unsexualized love. They offer a more powerful message if they AREN’T a couple. They also are not brothers forced by biology to cooperate and cohabitate. Just great, lifelong friends, terrific role models for that reason alone.

It’s a small quibble, and I hate making it during this great, historic week. Happy Pride, y’all.

Semi-snarky, semi-sincere, occasionally ranting, always paying attention. Feminist who can work a skirt and crack a joke. Grammar nerd who is also fun at parties. Mid-career writer/editor with 15 years’ experience in newspapers & magazines who now helps developers at a major media corporation communicate with the suits who write the checks. Pro-women, pro-family, pro-choice, pro-workingclass, pro-entrepreneur, pro-farmer. Like every other bourgeois Brooklynite, I choose local/organic/raw food — mostly vegetables — whenever possible/reasonable/affordable but I’m not a smug asshole about it. Hometown: Atlanta.
