Daggers in this letter defeat pistol taken from his abuser’s hand

This is surely one of the most erudite & dignified yet stilletto-sharp “fuck you” letters of all time. Who among us today could accomplish such a feat?! I humbly salute you, Mr. Anderson. Savor his words slowly and be prepared: After the initial elation fades, the letter’s understated horrors may creep in to your soul.

Note this was originally published in a newspaper, not presented as private correspondence, so the authenticity of the letter and its author (and his family) are apparently well-known in Ohio.

I also just did a little inflation calculating, and of course, responses vary widely… you can’t just take a figure from 150 years ago and multiply it. But $11,680 is a lot of money by any measure. Here is a nice representative response:

If you want to compare the value of $11,680.00 Income or Wealth in 1865 there are three choices. In 2010 the relative:
-historic standard of living value of that income or wealth is $161,000.00
– economic status value of that income or wealth is $1,950,000.00
– economic power value of that income or wealth is $17,200,000.00
